Small Businesses Need to Keep an Eye on Employees’ Driving

December 11th, 2009

At present, many employers of small businesses in the UK use personal vehicles for transport to work. It has been found that a large number of such people often commit driving related offences. The ratio in case of employees committing such offences is quite high- close to one third.

A majority of these driving related offences are over-speeding offences. However, close to 25% were also charged with driving while under influence of alcohol or drugs. One tenth of these workers do not have proper insurance for their vehicles while 16% were charged for not paying the penalty that was imposed on them.

According to the Director of business rental at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, the new data means that smaller businesses are having trouble in managing drivers. It is obvious that they cannot control the way their employees drive on the road. However, what they can do is to make sure that the vehicle is in good driving condition, as they are liable for the condition of the vehicle irrespective of whether the employee is using his personal vehicle or a company vehicle.

Another thing that the employers need to make sure is that their employees have proper insurance for their vehicles. Lack of proper insurance wastes time and money as employees end up paying fines and the employers suffer.

Driving license and its renewal is another important thing. Yearly check of driving license can help in making sure that the employees are not driving the vehicles in violation of any law.

The range of accredited NEBOSH courses can assist companies in training staff to be aware of the proper health and safety procedures for all kinds of workplace situations. The National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH General) is a qualification designed to help those with health and safety responsibilities to carry out their duties at work more effectively and to protect the organisations for which they work.
