Use VoIP to Make Free International Calls

February 1st, 2010

A lot of people who use mobile phones absolutely won’t change cell phone networks even though by changing they could benefit from much lower phone bills and reap the benefits of superior features and services, such as the ability to make free international calls. A vast amount of their friends and colleagues know their mobile phone number and they do not want to go through the hassle of switching mobile phone numbers and having to inform everyone what their new number is. If you are looking for a great way to save money on your phone bills, then signing up to VoIP is something well worth considering.

The remarkable thing about apps like Truphone is that they work with a wide range of mobile phones, and enable you to keep your own number as well as giving you a convenient alternative to make cheaper outbound calls. IP Telephony software app that enables mobile users to make VoIP calls and send SMS’s over the internet. The VoIP industry commonly refer to such apps as mobile voip, sip client, mobile sip, internet dialers, voip softphone or sip softphone.

When internet connections were slower in the early days of VoIP there was a slower take-up of internet telephony because of the poor sound quality when compared to a standard phone line. This has all changed however as broadband penetration increased and the cost of internet connections have gone down. The reason internet telephony allows you to save money on phone calls is because by routing the calls over the internet it allows you to avoid the fees usually incurred by your telecom provider for making use of their infrastructure.

European Commission Report Shows Increasing Internet Penetration

August 18th, 2009

It might look strange to the educated, well-to-do families that can afford to incorporate the internet in their everyday lives and use it for banking, shopping, blogging, or other such activities, but the glaring fact is that one third of the European population is still totally out of touch with the internet.

Last year, it was estimated that 40% of the European population had never used the broadband internet in their lives. The recent report published by the European Commission however suggests that the figures have seen an improvement. Moreover, people who go without the internet are mostly elderly people or those under financial difficulties.

The report also suggests that the Information Technology sector has borne lesser of the brunt of recession and can actually propel economic growth in recession-hit Europe.

EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media, Vivian Reding, commented on the report, saying that the need of the day is for all governments in Europe to take a coordinated step towards promoting digital technology, resulting in increased revenues across all sectors. She also suggested that the potential of digital economy in Europe could actually lead to creation of a lot of employment as well as fostering of sustainable economic development.

So providing access to the mobile broadband is an important development. A look at a dedicated mobile broadband website can answer questions and allay any fears about using the mobile internet and will have the bonus of offering good deals such as mobile broadband with free laptop to give ease of access when you sign up to the service of an internet provider.

Frustrated by the Credit Crunch?

December 5th, 2008

Like a large proportion of the rest of the country the effects of the recession are starting to catch up with me. Also like a lot of people I have a daunting amount of debt, so thought I would share this great money saving tip. If you want to reduce your expenditure a useful way to do so is to sign up to a VoIP provider. I have loads of friends I have made over the years when travelling, who live in different countries. I’m really bad at keeping in contact with people at the best of times, even more so when it’s the price of a long distance phone call. With VoIP that is no longer a problem; calls are really cheap, if not free in some circumstances.

I can whole heartedly recommend it – calls are cystal clear and there have been no problems with the line cutting out or anything. I think is possible to get some mobile VoIP applications now as well which I will definitely look in to. Now I’m making cheap calls to Ireland amongst other places I’ve saved myself enough money to spend on a few things I have been hopelessly saving up for over the past year – a new ipod. I can finally say good bye to my ancient mini disk player and welcome in the 21st century.

Don’t Let VoIP Catch You out

October 13th, 2008

Around nine WiFi VoIP handsets and phones have been put to the test by leading security experts, who say that security problems range from potential DoS attacks to more serious problems that allow “deep access” to the device that lets unscrupulous individual read any sensitive information on the phone.

Problems like this inevitable. So who should sort it out? it has been posited that if we see practices like this develop as these devices become more prevalent then the manufacturers will only have themselves to blame when the security backlash comes back to haunt them.

VoIP hacking is the contemporary version of war dialing – a method of automatically scanning telephone numbers using a modem, often ringing every phone number in a local area to find where computers or fax machines are available, then attempting to access them by guessing passwords.

Still there are actions people can take to limit security vulnerablities. Here’s a list of WiFi VOIP security issues, and some useful ways to protect against them:

Many directions of attack:
As the VoIP phones get more advanced, so could the points of entry for would be hackers. Email, client Web browsers, Bluetooth, SMS, WiFi, media players, and image viewers could all give hackers a point of entry. Though users can use open-source as well as commercial tools to frequently test their phones and networks, they’ll ultimately have to rely on vendors to also do effective testing on these VoIP phones.

Targeting phones in public environments:
For example a Bluetooth scanner could be hidden at the entrance to a major public space and be used to steal user data. It may be best to keep Bluetooth and other wireless features swicthed off when not needed.

Rogue access points:
Meanwhile at the office or on the road, users will have to keep their guard up and scan for rogue access points. Unscrupulous individuals will set up access points to target specifically WiFi phones in the corporate space as well as at conferences and other places business people like to come together. Decent device authentication and encryption can help provide protection here.

Targeted attacks:
Select attacks on precise voice-over-wireless networks can also be an issue, albeit one that the victims may try to downplay.
